Why use words when you have pictures?????? That is my theme today:) Instead of trying to come up with all the words to explain what I have been up to these past few weeks, I’ve decided to use my pictures!
Well I used a few more words than expected, but I hope you enjoyed catching up with my past few weeks in pictures despite the extra words:)
New……..the word of the day around here at the Newhouses!!!! First off we are in our new digs. It’s tiny but liveable. Clearing out over 2,500 square feet of house plus a 2 car garage and moving into 600 square feet is a challenge.
Here we are moving one of our last loads. Fortunate for us my parents loaned us one of their trailers to help move and to use as storage for the next year or so until we buy a new house.
We are getting use to the new arrangement and have managed to eek out our new work areas. It took a few weeks longer than we expected to get things set up. The arrangements are not purrrrrfect yet, but we can manage to make needles, dye fiber, and spin yarn……what else do you need?!??! lol….. Elbow room!!!!!
I’m working on a new secret project right now so can’t show you any current spinning photos, but hopefully in a few weeks I can let the cat out of the bag:) I would take pictures of the new digs, but the secret project is every where. Once it is finished up I will snap some photo’s so you can see what the worlds smallest spinning studio looks like…lol.
So much has happened sense I last blogged that I don’t think it is possible to catch you up on everything, so I will hit just a few of the highlights. First off the The New Hue Handspuns website has finally been updated. We were getting so out of date that all the new technology was having a hard time viewing our old shop. We had to give in and install new templates. For many people that isn’t a big deal, but for us older non-techies without children or a webmaster, it was a real headache. Lucky for me Hubby stuck with it and after many hours of frustrating work got the stupid lovely new template installed…and working! I cleaned up the front page a bit, and created several collages to rotate through the front page, but I still have a lot of work to get new listings up.
Biggest hill to climb right now is to get a new photo box made and find room for it. I had to leave my old set up behind when we move, it was looking a little shabby and there just wasn’t room for it. The new set up is almost done, and I hope to be taking a whole lot of pictures of handspun yarn, fiber, and needles in the next few days.
I’ve clocked in thousands of hours spinning over the past 20 years, and most of those hours were spent in my big old chair. Sad to say big old chair couldn’t make the move with us. It was just too big and a bit too broken to justify moving it into the new digs. Now I have a new little old chair. This little chair has been hiding in a corner of the house for years. The fabric is well worn, but I gave it a little spruce up with a Puletasi that my mother-in-law brought back from Samoa on one of her Red Cross trips.
The cool part about this chair is that it belonged to Will’s grandma and now we have moved into her old apartment with her little old chair! Will had a little flashback the first time he saw me sitting in “grandma’s chair” knitting away. As a kid he watched his grandma knitting in this same chair in the same room. Just to add a few more weird facts…his grandma and I share the same birthday, (not year…lol), I’m about the same build as she was, and my wedding ring was hers! I never met her, but I sure do seem to fit in here:)
Many of you know that electronics and I don’t get along well, and my computer and I have yet to reach a truce……..I’ve lost over half of this post twice now and I am conceding to the fact that the computer is smarter than me…..so I will end this post with the promise that I will be blogging on a regular basis now that we are all settled into our new digs! Next time I HOPE to be sharing pictures of new fiber and yarn!!!
I’m a list maker and a goal setter. Nothing makes me happier than to cross off a task or reach a goal. Last posting I was getting ready for a Godzilla tv movie marathon in preparation for SPINZILLA. It was grand. By the 2nd movie I was really into the Godzilla/Spinzilla mood. The hardest part was waiting for the start of Spinzilla! At last the start time approached, I snuck a quick nap in before the Midnight hour tolled. One minute after Midnight I was spinning away! I spun for about 4 hours just to officially start the week of spinning. That was my first goal, to be sure to start the race at the drop of the flag. Goal number one accomplished:)
Goal number 2 was to be up and spinning by 8 am each morning, and spend as much time as possible spinning before my 2 am bed time. I did pretty good with this goal. I was late to spinning a few mornings, and stayed up beyond my bed time on a few occasions but it all evened out pretty good. I give myself a passing grade on this goal, did good, but not Gold Star good.
Goal number 3 was to photo document my spinning as much as possible. I did good on this one…lol…took me over an hour to sort through all the pictures I snapped this past week. Here is some first day progress.
I had a lot of fun with the camera….. Spinning fiber waiting to be spun
The sillies tended to strike in the middle of the night… Sometimes the piles of fiber started spinning on their own…
Goal number 4 was to name the new colorway of Bam Huey. This picture confirmed the name I had in mind. Aurora Borealis! I started with a purple/blue color combination for one ply of the yarn for the night sky. The 2nd ply would be the explosion of color produced by geomagnetic storms hitting our atmosphere. I’d say I aced this goal:)
Goal number 5 was to spin more than I did last year. Hit that goal on day 4! I counted up 17,000-ish yards by Thursday surpassing last year’s 16,852 yards.
Last year I had to sit out several days due to burns and visitors….not so this year. Everyone did pretty good, just a few phone calls and a few distractions that could have been avoided. On the whole the family was on their best behavior and I didn’t have to work too much during the week.
Goal number 6 was to have the best spinning day ever on Saturday 10/11/14 and do this by spinning 20 hours. Why you ask?!?! Because that was my 20th anniversary of my first spinning lesson. Saturday marked my 20th year of doing what I love best. I met my closest friend and my soon to be mentor on that day. The 3 of us hope to get together a bit later and celebrate. If it were not for these 2 ladies and their support I would not be the spinner I am today. I had to be sure to make it a good day even if I could not spend it with them:) I love to do movie marathons when I have big spinning projects. One of my all time favorites to pop in the DVD player is the extended versions of Lord of The Rings. That is always a great 12 hour kick off. The even better part is that there are now the 2 Hobbit movies to add to that line up giving me about 18 hours of spinning entertainment. To top it off for a full 20 hours of movies I ended with my all time favorite movie, The Wizard of OZ. I can never get tired of watching that movie…what can I say, I’m still a farm girl at heart who wants color in her life!
It was fun to snap some pictures while watching here are some of of my favs….
Gandalf watched over me too as I spun along and drank home made mead from my Lord of the Rings Chalice .
Keeping the Dwarf’s beards out of my spinning was a challenge as well
I started spinning at 6 am on Saturday 10/11/14 and finished spinning at 2:15 am Sunday morning when Dorthy decided there really was “No Place Like Home”. There were a few 15 minute meal and bathroom breaks, but for the most part it was spinning, spinning, and more spinning! Wonderful Hubby cooked up this huge 17 pound hunk of beef for 11 hours. Talk about mouth watering caramelized yummy goodness!!!
It was a grand day and I had a wonderful time reaching this goal of 20 hours of spinning on my 20th anniversary:)))))) I’d say I got an A+ on reaching this goal! The best part is I also reached goal number 7 early this day…… to make last year’s missed goal of 20,000 yards!
The days of SPINZILLA did blur one into the next somewhat like this flying plying bobbin…
Sunday was full of football….can’t say my teams did to well, but still it was a fun day of spinning and yelling/cheering. I snapped this picture for a particular FB friend….. I think you know who you are you green and yellow fan you….lol…
Before long the week was coming to an end and the final hours were counting down. Goal number 8 was to spin to the very end and cross the finish line strong. I decided that the best way for a strong finish to SPINZILLA week was finish the way I started….with a Godzilla movie……..
Midnight struck soon after Godzilla was destroyed, and it was fiber down and time to count yardage. Goal number 8 was to break 30,000 yards…..and I made it!!! 2am picture wasn’t great, so snapped one first thing in the morning… here is over 30,000 yards!!!!
The final goal was to double last years yardage…. I would have needed to spin 34,000 yards to make that goal…..I missed it by about a mile!! My final measured, and remeasured yardage is…….drum roll please……….. 30,723 Monster SPINZILLA yards spun! That is a bit over 17 miles in one week!!!
Now it is a matter of waiting to see how our Team Knot Another Hat placed. We had many heavy duty spinners working hard! and of course I’m wondering if I will hang on to the individual grand champion spot this year. I’m keeping my fingers crossed, but I well know that there are many spinners faster and better than me…..just not too many as crazy as me when it comes to spinning:)
It is almost time for SPINZILLA!!!! At the time of writing this there is about 30 hours to SPINZILLA……..and I am almost ready…lol…almost:)
I believe we all are born with talents and it is up to each of us to discover them and develop them to the fullest. Some people are whizzes with numbers, others accomplish amazing athletic feats. There are those who climb mountains, and those that swim across large bodies of water. Brave souls who sail around the world in tiny little boats all by them selves and those that leave the confines of earth and step into space, and don’t forget those that eat many hot dogs in just a few minutes!…….Me……. my talent is to spin. Nothing earth shattering, nothing that will be remembered after I’m gone, but I spin and I love it!!!!! I see spinning similar to riding a bike. You can take a lovely Sunday afternoon ride, soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the view….. Or you can take your bike to the top of Pikes Peak and race down like the wind! Your hair blowing straight out behind you, heart racing , thrill ride of your life adventure. I’m the top of the mountain thrill ride type:)))))) So you can imagine that SPINZILLA is my kind of FUN! Here is my chance to show myself just what I can do….and the rest of you too:))))
Getting ready for SPINZILLA isn’t just about getting fiber ready, but also about setting the stage for success. First off you have to clear the calendar. I’ve told the family I am unavailable from the 6-12 of October. We are in the middle of selling our house and moving in with MIL but still everyone knows that Cheryl is UNAVAILABLE. No packing, no cleaning, nothing but spinning and the absolute least amount of time spent at the bakery and running the web store.
Next step is to stock up on the essentials. For me this is making up quick meals that I can fix and consume in a few minutes.
I’ve cooked up pasta, made a big pot of fat free sauce. There are eggs boiled for some quick protein and I will make lots and lots of little turkey sandwiches tomorrow. These are my favorite meals that my cranky old body will digest. My cooking during SPINZILLA will consist of a few minutes of microwaving or toasting…simple and quick!
Next up you need to have plenty of fiber to spin.
There is 10 pounds of Bam Huey fiber all rolled up and waiting to be dyed. (yes that is a special treat in the background, all low fat chips just for me!) I’m only dyeing up 6 pounds of this Bam Huey for SPINZILLA. I’ve been waiting for my dye order to arrive, but it must be stuck in customs. So this means I had to come up with an alternate plan. I have a secret order that I was planning to spin, but without the dyes I could not do it. I then decided to create a new colorway just for SPINZILLA and see just how much of it I could spin in 1 week. I dyed the fiber in the wee hours this morning and by evening here is the first batch drying.
What…..did you think I was going to show you the new colorway this early ?!?!?!?!?!?!
Nope, you gotta wait until I have a skein all plied up:)
I have also been getting my work area ready. I’ve emptied all my bobbins and the skein winder is at the ready.
Miss Mini is empy and ready to spin, my chair is ready and waiting. The sad part is the chair will be going to the dump after SPINZILLA. The poor thing is comfortable, but it is falling apart. It is sad to see it go, but it is time…
Yes you can see the fiber hanging to dry, but the color really doesn’t show.
Last but not least one must get in the proper mood to spin for a week. How better than to watch a Godzilla marathon on TV?!?!? It would have been sooooo purrrrrfect for the Godzilla marathon to be on Sunday night just before the start of Spinzilla 12:01 AM Monday October 6th…… but I’m happy enough with a Saturday night marathon.
So to all of you who train to run marathons, climb mountains, or eat the most hot dogs, I salute you, for Monday I climb my Mount Everest, swim my English Channel, and race my amazing race….. On Monday I spin……… life doesn’t get much better than this:)
Sign ups for the team have been extended to Midnight Pacific Time JUNE 8th 2014. This is the last chance to purchase 2 new yarn/fiber lines at wholesale prices!!!!!
You may be asking yourself what is a New Line Launch Team. Short answer is that it is a way for Knitters, Spinners and Lovers of Hand Knits, to help me get a new handspun yarn and fiber line into my shop. What do the Team Members get out of it? Wholesale prices!
Starting a new handspun yarn and fiber line takes lots of work and money. Hard work isn’t an issue, I’m used to hard work and love long hours of spinning. It is money that I need to invest into a large fiber purchase. What the team members do for me is prepay for fiber and yarn which gives me the cold hard cash to make a large fiber buy. I will be selling a limited number of spots on the team for knitters, spinners, and lovers of Hand Knits. All kits will be sold at Wholesale prices! This is the first time I have offered handspun yarn, fiber and Hand Knits at wholesale prices to the public. This special pricing will only happen during the launch of a new yarn/fiber line, so grab it while you can because you will not see it for this price again!
How do you become a New Line Launch Team Member? Simple, purchase any kit! Spots on the team will be open from May 10, 2014 Through May 30, 2014. Warning, spots are limited and may sell out prior to the cut off date. Kits can be purchased here here at New Hue Handspuns.
I will be hosting a Knit and Spin Along at my Ravelry Group New Hue Handspuns Creations. Check out the group to see how New Line Launch Team members can receive discount coupons for New Hue Handspuns.com. There will be prizes awarded for team members, the more that participate, the more prizes.
Let’s get on to introducing the yarn!! Here it is at last, the Cam Huey and 1234 Huey handspun yarns and spinning fiber.
The Cam Huey handspun yarn is DK weight 2 ply yarn. The white, thicker rustic ply is 100 % Merino wool. The thin brown ply is Baby Camel Down. Talk about soft and strong! The lofty Merino gives strength and a big squooosh factor to the yarn, and the oh so soft Baby Camel Down just begs to be snuggled. I made an ear warmer/head band out of this yarn last Winter. It was so comfortable and warm, I only took it off to wash it once in a while. I was quite please on how durable the yarn was. The Cam Huey comes in a 200 yard skein.
The 1234 Huey handspun yarn is also a DK weight 2 ply yarn. Both plies are 100% Merino wool. I hand paint the fiber with 3 colors in a gradient style. I then spin the fiber in the color pattern of 1-2-3-3-2-1. This way you can create a scarf/project with matching ends. The skein for the scarf knit kit is 100 yards. The skein for the shawl size kit is 300 yards. There are 10 colorways for you to choose from.
Three of the colorways are pictured here, Beach, Mountain, and Forest. The remaining 7 colorways will be for those who want a bit of surprise to their package. I will only describe the colors, no pictures
1. Beach – Cream, Pale Green, Pale Blue.
2. Mountain – Purple, Bluish Purple, Blue.
3. Forest – Light Green, Dark Green, Brown.
4. Ocean – Light Purplish Blue, Medium Blue, Dark Blue.
5. Meadow – Spring green, Medium Green, Dark Green.
6. Rose Garden – Bright Pink, Reddish Pink, Deep Dark Pink.
The Scarf Knit Kit has 500 yards of DK weight handspun yarn. Included in the kit are two 200 yard skeins of Cam Huey Handspun yarn and one 100 yard skein of 1234 Huey Handspun yarn, your choice from 10 colorways. Along with the yarn you will receive my new scarf/shawl pattern, created specifically for this yarn combination. The pattern will be available on Ravelry, or I can email a PDF copy to you, or a hard copy can be included with the yarn shipment if you prefer. There will be only 50 of these kits offered at the wholesale price.
THE SHAWL SIZE KNIT KIT
The Shawl size kit is 3 times the size of the scarf kit. This kit includes Six 200 yard skeins of the Cam Huey Handspun, and one 300 yard skein of 1234 Huey Handspun. Along with the yarn you will receive my new scarf/shawl pattern, created specifically for this yarn combination. The pattern will be available on Ravelry, or I can email a PDF copy to you, or a hard copy can be included with the yarn shipment if you prefer. There will be only five of these kits offered at the wholesale price.
THE SPIN KIT
The Spin Kit will include all the fiber needed to make the 3 skeins of yarn in the Scarf size knit kit. Six ounces of Merino wool, two ounces of Baby Camel Down and two ounces of hand painted Merino wool. Be sure to join in the Spin along on Ravelry if you would like coaching on how to spin it up like Cam Huey and 1234 Huey. There will be only 50 of these kits offered at the wholesale price.
LOVERS OF HAND KNITS
Do you love handspun hand knits, but you just don’t have the time or energy to spin and knit for yourself? Want to give someone a very special birthday or holiday gift? This is your chance to join the team and help support the New Line Launch! I will be offering VERY limited spots for Lovers of Hand Knits. There will be two finished Scarves offered and one finished Shawl. All hand knits will be dyed, spun and knit to order with your choice from 10 colorways. Expect 1-3 months for delivery. Your delivery date will be set when order is placed.
Launch Teams memberships will be available from May 10 – June 8th. No limit on how many of the kits you can purchase, but the total number of kits is limited to 50 Scarf Knit Kits, 5, Shawl Knit Kits, 50 Spin kits, and 3 Lovers of Hand Knits. USA shipping will be a $6 flat rate. I will ship international, but I am sorry to say that this time around I will have to charge actual shipping costs. I’ve always kept international shipping at a flat rate of $6, but I can’t afford to pay the additional shipping cost on wholesale purchases. International purchases will receive a paypal invoice for the actual additional shipping costs over $6 after purchase is made.
International orders will ship on Monday July14, 2014. USA orders will ship on Monday July 21, 2014. If all orders are completed ahead of schedule I will ship earlier!

I’m excited to get the Cam Huey and 1234 Huey lines up and running, and am looking forward to getting to know the team! Come by Ravelry and introduce yourself in the group.
Today I will let you in on my plans for all that yarn in the middle of The Big Table…….Minis, yes, lots and lots of mini skeins! This pile of yarn will soon turn into many many Mini Skeins.
Making handspun yarn can result in a lot of small bits of yarn. There is the testing of dye combinations, then so many options to spin up the fiber. This means there is lots of handspun yarn around my house that never makes it into the Shop. Today I start winding away! I’ve been having a lot of fun with color work lately in my knitting. I whipped up the hat you see in the picture using lots of little bits of left overs. My plan is to have several baskets of minis in my booth at Columbia Gorge Fiber Festival along with a few samples and patterns to inspire others to play with color….while at the same time getting all these pretty bits of yarns out into the world:)
I did get the fingerless mitts finished yesterday, but I stayed up too late watching TV, and fell asleep before I could write a blog post. I got hooked on a show…..there are 44 episodes of it on Netflix….I watched 17 of them yesterday…Yup, I’m hooked. So the rule today was, Post first THEN watch TV!!!!
I’ll leave you today with a picture of the drying mitts
They never look quite as good all wet, but perhaps in a day or two I will get some prettier pictures outside. Speaking of outside….look how nice and peaceful my view was yesterday!
The Ravellenic Winter Games 2014 are in Day 6 now. I’m playing on Team Knitspot, and have made some progress. I have 2 projects in the WIP Dancing event. I’ve added a few repeats to my Flamming Swan but my Blue Sugar Frosting is still awaiting some attention. What I have been working on is my Fleece to Finished Object game. I’m using my new colorway Water Lilies with Anne Hanson’s Hillflowers. I started by dyeing the Bam Huey Fiber with a new dyeing pattern I’ve been experimenting with. The dyeing pattern needs a little more tweaking to achieve the look I was going for, but I have to say I am pretty pleased with the results.
I spun up 2 skeins of the Water Lilies. The first I split the 3 oz roll of fiber length wise into 16 strips and plied it against itself . I’m using this skein for the scarf. The second skein I spun up in a heavy sport weight and plan to make a set of mitts to go with the scarf. Here is the start of my Water Lilies and Hillflowers.
I’ve been finishing and testing the first batch of our size 2 and 6 Newhouse Custom Carbon Fiber Needles . We have had some rod issues and we have chosen to redo some of the needles. Sorry that this has delayed shipping by a day or two, but we want your needles to be purrrrrrfect!
Mr X’s Sweater is in a time out. The re-seaming is moving along slowly, hopefully I will get back to it in the next day or so and GET-ER-DONE!
I have another Trunk Show coming up at the end of February, and I will have all the details of that in my next post.Columbia Gorge Fiber Festival is looming. I’ve been making plans for that and will tell you about them soon.
Until next time,
Happy Spinning and Knitting!
Cheryl <^..^>
This is my first seaming project. I’ve not done a sweater before because I’m not confident in my seaming ability. I googled and watched videos about seaming. Before long I figured out how to do a mattress stitch, did a few practice runs, and dove into seaming up the sweater! The mega pound sweater then hit the bath.
At last the sweater was laid out to dry.
I’ve enjoyed knitting Anne Hanson’s Aztec Mazes. I fell in love with the pattern and the ease of knitting it. I did drop the cables because I thought it suited my brother-in-law better with out them. Yes that’s right, my BIL Dan is Mr X. He loves the sweater….the problem…. I made the arms too big. I have been researching my best option to skinny up the arms. I’ve decided to re-seam the arms and cut off the extra materials. I have been working up my courage to start cutting, and this afternoon it is my goal to take the plunge! Wish me luck!!!! One more close up before the scissors attack.
OK a REALLY Really close up…..
I’ve had some other knitting on the needles. I finished off my hat of old left overs. This is some of my Merino/Angora handspun used with handspun Alpaca. A VERY nice WARM hat!
I’m getting geared up to watch the Olympics on TV and knit along with the Ravelry Games. I’m playing on Team Knitspot. I have 2 WIP’s to knit on and am contemplating a fiber to finished project. starting from dying the fiber, spinning the yarn, then knitting an Anne Hanson Pattern. That starts on Friday, guess I best be making some decisions soon!
We have good news on the needle front. Our Newhouse Custom Carbon Fiber Needles will be offered in two new sizes. We have a small delivery of the new US size 2 – 3.0mm, and US size 6 – 4.0mm raw rods on the way. We have been taking pre orders and have a few spots left for this first batch. The new sizes should be listed in the shop early to mid March, until then if you would like to order a custom pair, please contact me HERE through the shop.
There has been spinning too. I had fun spinning up 1,000 yards of Bam Huey in the Joseph’s Coat colorway. This turned out to be a very heavy fingering weight of about 14/13 wpi. Bobbins full of all the rich colors of Joseph’s Coat always makes me smile.
I forgot to take pictures before sending this skein off to it’s new home, but I did remember to take one pre bath, all tied up in it’s washing ties.
There was also baking going on…..what better to do on a freezing cold afternoon than warm the house by baking an apple pie?!!?!
I’m going to go grab a cup of coffee and a nice warm piece of pie right now…see ya!
Our Trunk Show is almost here! It will be at Yarntastic! Friday November 29th through Thursday December 5th. Stop by 6802 SE Milwaukie Ave. Portland, OR 97202 for a visit and some yarn/fiber petting:) We will also have our Custom Carbon Fiber Needles available. Don’t miss this chance to do some test knitting with these light weight strong needles!
Here is a sample of my “show”. For those of you who have found me at fiber shows this will look familiar. Come by Yarntastic and say hi!
Unfortunately my shipment of dyes has been detained somewhere between Australia and Portland Oregon. That means I won’t have as much dyed fiber available for the Trunk show as I would like, but don’t worry there will be plenty of fiber and I will take orders:) I’ve been packaging up the fiber I dyed last week. How many people have a dinning room table as colorful as this!?!
I will be knitting and spinning away at Yarntastic! throughout the week. I hope you will stop by!
Yes that is what I have been doing this week DYEING!! My Trunk show is coming soon. Yarntastic! will be hosting my trunk show November 29th through December 5th. If you are in the Portland Oregon neighborhood, come on by. Saturday November 30th is Small business Saturday, stop by Yarntastic! to say hi and support 2 small businesses in one stop! I will have my hand painted fibers, handspun yarns and our Newhouse Custom Carbon Fiber needles all on display . There will even be tester needles waiting for you to give them a trial run. Just Add Knitter Kits will be available also….could be that purrrrfect gift for a knitter that needs a special treat for the holidays.
from fiber to steamer here is what my dyeing days are like
I will be dyeing more fiber all week. My neck is already in pain, bending and reaching over the dyeing table isn’t going to help matters any, but the dyeing needs to be done, so dyeing I will do!!!
here is another style of dyeing.
I have plenty more fiber that needs color and I enjoy a good James Bond movie along with a shaken martini, and a corny joke,so tomorrow I will pop in a movie, shake up a martini and…….. Dye another Day.
